Defending champions DPR Korea won the AFC Challenge Cup 2012 by defeating Turkmenistan 2-1 at the Dasharath Stadium in Kathmandu.
With this victory DPR Korea qualified for the AFC Asian Cup 2015 to be held in Australia. The Koreans fell in the back seat as early as in the second minute, but came back in the 36th minute through Jang Song’s goal.
Song proved instrumental one more time in the 86th minute when he scored the match winner through a spot kick.
Top Goal Scorer Award of the AFC Challenge Cup Football Tournament 2012 was awarded to Philip James Younghusband of Philippines. He had scored six goals. Pak nam-Chol of DPR Korea bagged the Abdhullah al Dabal Award.
Constituent Assembly Chairman Subas Nembang awarded the AFC Challenge Cup to the winner DPR Korea amidst a function at the Dasharath Stadium.
Likewise, he gave away medals to the players of DPR Korea, Turkmenistan and the Philippines. Host Nepal, Palestine, Philippines, India, Turkmenistan, Maldives, Tajikistan and North Korea had qualified for the championship.
