Nepal tops group with a slim win

Dec 30, 2016 - Nepal booked their place in the semifinal of the 4th SAFF Championship 2016 with a 1-0 win over Sri Lanka in Kanchenjunga Stadium on Friday.

Nepal topped the group with three wins out if three after a nervy win. Nepal needed an 87th-minute Own Goal from Gunawardane to snatch the win from a defensive Sri Lankan side. Sri Lanka hardly possessed attacking threat throughout the match but they kept on putting Nepal's attack on bay.

Nepal's Head Coach Kumar Thapa said that games like these are part of football. "The opposition's coach came with his tactics and he was successful. Credits to him for stopping us but we got the result we came for, just not the way we hoped for.", said Thapa.

Nepal will play first semifinal against runners-up of Group B on the 2nd of January at 2:00 PM IST at Kanchenjunga Stadium.
