Nepal cruise into semis

Aug. 21, 2017 - In a crucial match day in the SAFF U-15 Championship, hosts Nepal routed Maldives 6-0 to secure a semifinal berth with a game in hand.

BRIJESH CHAUDHARY scored a brace while DARSHAN GURUNG, ROSHAN RANA MAGAR, AKASH BUDA MAGAR, ROSHAN DONG scored a goal each in a morale boosting win for Nepal.

BRIJESH CHAUDHARY kept up Nepal’s push by scoring the opening goal in the 14th minute. Chaudhary scored his second penetrating through the defense and unleashing a scorcher in the top corner in the 73rd minute.

A dominant looking Nepal backed by a vociferous crowd were lucky to be awarded a penalty in the 36th minute. Skipper ROSHAN RANA MAGAR stepped in to do the honours scoring in the 37th minute.

Earlier DARSHAN and AKASH had struck in the 21st minute and 45th minutes respectively to give Nepal a lead 4-0 in the interval.

Nepal looked more superior with their quick exchanges. ROSHAN DONG made the pressure pay scoring just two minutes into the second half.

After making an exit from the championship, Maldives coach MOHAMED SHAAZLY spoke highly of Nepal.

“Nepal has been a superior side for sure. But the real game comes against India.”

As for his side, he said that the tie-draw was a little harsh for them as they had to face India in the opener.  The one-sided win that India bagged against his side, he said, was the reason behind his team's  below par performance against Nepal.

Nepal’s delighted coach SUNIL SHRESTHA said,” We wanted to win the match with big margin. We were focused to score more and I guess boys were under pressure to delive that, which must have resulted in some lapse in the defense.”

“Match against India is not going to be as easy as today. We have to amend our mistakes against them for a good result,” added Shrestha.
