Players, officials welcome equal pay decision

The 11th Executive Committee meeting of All Nepal Football Association on December 10 decided to pay equal amount to both men and women national team members.

Following the decision, the women's national team will receive the same amount as their male counterparts.

The decision to pay equal amount to both male and female team has earned plaudits from many quarters with players, officials and activists welcoming the decision to treat both male and female player in the same pay scale.

ANFA President Karma Tsering Sherpa said it was a priority of the football governing body to pay both male and female members in equal scale.

"Women's football has great scope in Nepal and as per our plan to promote it further, we took the equal pay decision which was immediately endorsed by the executive committee meeting," said Sherpa. "We wanted to bring equality in pay since we took over at ANA helm and hope this decision would encourage our women's team and bring joy to everyone who love this game," he said.

The equal pay decision has also been received well by national team members.

"This is a historic decision by ANFA. We firstly thank the leadership for such decision and hope this will help motivate the players," said national women's team forward Sabitra Bhandari. Bhandari said equal treatment in terms of pay will set example for other sectors to follow suit.

National men's team captain Bharat Khawas was also delighted after the decision. "This decision surely needs appreciation. This sends a positive message to others and gives a morale boost to the players to perform better," said Khawas. "It is a matter of pride for our country and us footballers to join footballing giants like Brazil, England, Australia in equal pay for both male and female team members," he added. 

Bandana Rana, vice chair of the United Nation's Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) said ANFA's decision of equal pay has set an example of gender equality in the country. "Unequal pay is also a form of discrimination against women. ANFA's decision to provide equal remuneration to both male and female team is very laudable. This decision should now be institutionalized and spread in other aspects of the game too," said Rana. Rana hoped this decision will be a role model for other sports and sectors in the country.

The Executive Committee meeting endorsed the decision of equal pay following which members of both male and female team members will now receive an equal amount of Rs 18,000 per month.

Nepal's WC Qualifiers home journey starts 25 March 2021

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has announced the fixtures of second round of the Asian leg of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 qualifiers.

The second round matches which were originally scheduled for March-April this year, were postponed to October-November before again being pushed ahead to 2021.

Nepal will play against Chinese Taipei on 25 March, 2021 and against Australia on 30 March, 2021.

Likewise, Nepal will take on Jordan on 7 June, 2021.

Nepal, placed in Group B, has three points from four matches played in 2020. The last match Nepal played in the qualifiers  was against Kuwait in Bhutan which resulted in 1-0 loss.

Nepal will host all the remaining matches of the qualifiers. If home and away match basis cannot be utilised due to current unavoidable situation, centralised venue would come into effect.

ANFA Ex Co meeting successfully completed

All Nepal Football Association (ANFA) on Thursday successfully completed its 11th Executive Committee meeting.

ANFA President Karma Tsering Sherpa chaired the meeting at ANFA Complex in Satdobato. 

Discussions were held on various issues ranging from club licensing regulation to accepting the resignation of men's football team head coach Johan Kalin. Executive Committee members put their queries regarding the issues taken up for discussion. ANFA leadership answered the questions on the agendas put forth by the members.

Head coach Johan Kalin resigns, Bal Gopal Maharjan appointed acting head coach

The 11th Executive Committee meeting on Thursday decided to accept the resignation of men's national team head coach Johan Kalin. 

Kalin resigned from his post effective from November 1. The meeting has decided to appoint Bal Gopal Maharjan as the acting head coach of the men's national team.

Kalin was appointed as the head coach of the national men's national team on March 1, 2019. His first game in charge of the national team was against Kuwait in March 21, 2019. Under Kalin, Nepal played 11 matches, including one against Malaysian club Johor Darul Tazim FC, winning one, drawing two and losing eight.

Coach Kalin had flown to his native Sweden on March 27 due to coronavirus pandemic and could not return to assume national team duties because of the travel restrictions imposed in his country.
