Bhujel, Shahi to miss SAFF Women's Championship, undergo surgeries

National women's team defender Hira Kumari Bhujel and midfielder Dipa Shahi will miss the remainder of the 2024 SAFF Women's Championship after suffering ACL injuries in the match against Bhutan on Friday.

Team Doctor Jyoti Rai and Physiotherapist Navina Baidhya confirmed the injuries on Sunday, stating that both players are expected to undergo surgeries the same day.

Physiotherapist Baidhya mentioned that recovery from ACL surgery typically takes around nine months but noted that Nepali players have returned to the field sooner, depending on how well they recover.

Bhujel and Shahi were substituted during Nepal's goalless draw in their opening match against Bhutan. They were rushed to the hospital, where scans confirmed the extent of their injuries.

Nepal begin SAFF Women's Championship 2024 with Bhutan draw

Nepal began their 2024 SAFF Women's Championship campaign with a goalless draw against Bhutan on Friday at the Dasharath Stadium. Despite dominating possession for most of the match, Nepal failed to find the back of the net.

Adding to their woes, Nepal lost defender Hira Kumari Bhujel and midfielder Dipa Shahi to what appeared to be serious injuries.

Bhutan's goalkeeper, Sangita Monger, was instrumental in keeping her team in the game, making several crucial saves to deny Nepal a breakthrough.

Rashmi Ghising, Saru Limbu, Amisha Karki, Dipa Shahi, and Rekha Poudel all missed key chances that could have secured three points for Nepal.

Notably, this draw marks the first time Nepal has played a goalless match in the history of the SAFF Women's Championship, having scored at least once in all previous six editions.
